Old Fort Johnson welcomes volunteers who enjoy being part of an active, growing organization whose primary mission is to preserve and present local history in a friendly and accessible way. Skills and qualities desired: Ability to be comfortable speaking to groups of people; desire to learn and explain the history of the Fort and Sir William Johnson; capability to climb stairs and remain on your feet for an hour or so. Training and docent handbook provided. Days and times: Anytime during Fort touring hours, which are May 15 to October 15, Wednesday through Sunday from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Time commitment expected: Two or more days a month. Gift Shop/Visitor Center Volunteer Job Description: Work in the gift shop/visitor center greeting visitors, signing them up for tours and handling gift shop sales. Skills and qualities desired: Good people skills, ability to run cash register, general knowledge of the history of the Fort. Days and times: Anytime during Fort touring hours, which are May 15 to October 15, Wednesday through Sunday from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. Time commitment expected: Two or more days a month. Gardening Job Description: Work on the Fort grounds in the flower and herb gardens. Job entails maintaining existing gardens and some trimming of trees and shrubs. Skills and qualities desired: Ability to do moderately strenuous work; desire to help care for the Fort gardens and keep them looking beautiful throughout the season. Days and times: The days and/or hours that the Fort is not open to the public. Read about the new Colonial Garden Project. Museum Shop Project Job Description: Volunteers work together to make a variety of items to be sold in the Forts gift shop. Items can include holiday ornaments, hand-sewn items, food mixes, and other crafts. The items are made at home by individuals or by groups of volunteers working together a few times a year. The profit from the sale of these items goes directly to the gift shop. |
