Symposium Title: Agents of Change in Colonial New York: Sir William Johnson’s World

In the second half of the eighteenth century, the Mohawk Valley of Upstate New York was a microcosm of the changes reshaping North America. Iroquois homelands west and north of Albany were being populated by people of Dutch, Anglo-Irish-Scots, and Palatine German heritage. A new culture was rising from the interactions and confrontations of these nations.
Sir William Johnson was a central figure in this story from his arrival in 1738 to his death in 1774. Local rivalries and alliances continued to influence loyalties when the American Revolution broke out and continued long after peace was declared.
This symposium seeks to promote the latest analytical scholarship on the development of the Mohawk Valley Region in colonial Upstate New York. Particular emphasis will be placed on the personal, professional and cultural relationships among Sir William Johnson, Major General Philip Schuyler, Brig. General Nicolas Herkimer, the people of the Six Nations, and others in developing a unique Mohawk Valley culture.
All presentations will be open to the public and the use of visuals is strongly encouraged. Scholars from multiple disciplines are urged to participate. Selected papers may be published by the New York State Historical Association quarterly journal, New York History.
